I'm a Soprano?Contributed by: Dave Best A number of people have asked me why I sit with the Basses if I am a Soprano. I’d like to clarify that issue… (as a whisper)…I’m not really a Soprano. It would be neat to be a Soprano because they get to sing melody most of the time. But their notes are way too high for me… I can’t even think notes that high. No, I’m not an Alto. It would be fun to be an Alto because they get to sing alternate melodies… but their notes are still way too high for me. And I’m not a Tenor. I would enjoy being a Tenor because they get to sing some funky juice notes… but I can only hit about half the notes in their range and most of those are painful… their notes are still too high for me. So, I sing with the Basses because I can hit most of the notes and because they get to sing lyrics that are insightful and thought provoking. An example of one of our greatest hits was recorded on our first Open Voices CD about two years ago. Dumb dumb, dumb da dumb, dumb dumb, dumb da dumb. (pronounced ‘dum’) This is one of our more recent hits; Do, do do, do do do do do do, Do, do do, do do do. (pronounced ‘dew’) Now doesn’t that make you feel that ‘love is all around’? After much soul searching, I have finally decided to come out of the closet. This summer, I am going to march right down the middle of Princess Street during the Bass Pride week parade and declare to everyone that… I AM A BASS… AND PROUD OF IT!!! |
